What to Expect

OCD is an often debilitating and life consuming but treatable mental health concern. You do not need to try and cope with OCD alone. You can expect our OCD counsellors to be compassionate in their approach to working with clients, while providing a structured and methodical treatment modality. The counselling treatment for OCD is quite specific and personalized.

02.
Clinical Approach

Research and client feedback has shown the best practice approach for treatment of OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). This approach utilizes aspects of prolonged exposure and desensitization to manage, overcome, and decouple obsessive thoughts from the complusive behaviors. Breaking this connection is key to managing underlying anxiety symptoms. While going through this process, self-regulation techniques are often used to help clients cope.

03.
Expected Outcomes

The long term goal with OCD is the management of symptoms so people can function well in life, relationships, and work. Often Anxiety or Trauma work is also required to manage the underlying issue that drives the OCD behavior. Depending on severity of symptoms this treatment timeline can vary.

What To Expect

OCD is treatable. Our counsellors specialize in evidence-based OCD treatment that is structured, personalized, and effective. From the first session, you'll have a clear picture of the clinical process, goals, and what to expect along the way. Compassionate in approach, outcome-focused in practice.

05

Clinical Approach

"The best practice treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). With the help of nervous system regulation techniques, this process gradually exposes clients to anxiety-triggering thoughts or situations while resisting the compulsive response. This breaks the loop between obsession and compulsion. Over time, this decouples the thought from the urge, and the underlying anxiety driving the behavior can be fully resolved. "

06

Expected Outcomes

With effective ERP treatment, most clients see meaningful reduction in symptoms and a return to functioning well in life, relationships, and work. OCD is often connected to underlying anxiety or trauma, and addressing those roots is often the second part of the process. Treatment timelines vary based on severity and complexity, but you can expect improvement to symptoms within 3-5 sessions.

07

Defining OCD

OCD is an anxiety cycle characterized by two core features: obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that generate significant anxiety. Compulsions are the repeated responses to that anxiety, typically an attempt to cope by suppressing it temporarily. Over time, the cycle repeats and the underlying anxiety worsens.

08

Symptoms of OCD

The presentation of symptoms often varies per person, but the cycle is consistent. Overwhelming anxiety related to an obsession, followed by an automated compulsive response. Some examples include: fear of contamination followed by compulsive handwashing, an intrusive thought followed by distracting behavior, or anxiety about safety followed by repeatedly checking locks.

09

Signs you may be struggling with OCD

OCD is a maladaptive attempt to cope with underlying anxiety or trauma. The problem is that this process only provides short-term relief. Over time there are diminishing returns, underlying issues worsen, and compulsions intensify. If you have identified this pattern and are struggling to manage symptoms, it may be time to find a long-term solution.
